I made it after discovering that whatsapp limits exports/backups to a maximum of 40k messages, plaintext exports only, and completely skips/deletes messages that have media attached to it (more background is on my blog if you care to read). It happens to me on any computer. Whatsapp web, desktop app, all worked fine for me before.

But this really sucks, every time that whatsapp releases an update, this happens. You do realize that whatsapp is a meta product, and apple has absolutely no control over meta’s decisions or plans! I'm using whatsapp web instead and using the feature download app from chrome which allow me to have the whatsapp web as an independent window and right now it works better than the official desktop app for catalina. Once apple opens this whatsapp on ipad, i believe more users would move to apple ecosystem. Open whatsapp web in chrome web browser, f12 (enter dev tools), now go to application tab and delete all indexeddb one by one.
Apple isn’t blocking whatsapp, as evidenced by the fact that whatsapp is available for macs.
I have been limited to using whatsapp web since the last 2 months. It will start fresh and for me it is now blazing fast. News, updates and general discussions about the app can be posted here. I can still do that though the phone if it's really needed, but that's a bit of a hassle.
Whatsapp desktop app and whatsapp web are two different ways to access whatsapp account on computers. I tried everything from uninstalling whatsapp, reinstalling it, even tried on a brand new windows laptop but it didn't work.
