In the sound settings window, under the output section, make sure your desired output device (usually speakers or headphones) is selected as the default device. Have you run the laptop makers update utility to update both drivers and bios, as by default win does not update drivers, you obtain this from the maker. Unplug the headphones and the volume drops to.
