According to stock photographs, rural education is overwhelmingly connected to developing countries. (1) what are the experiences of rural students at higher education institutions? Different sources of literatures were reviewed, and data was analysed thematically and discussed within the context of learning at rural areas, which was the focus of the study.
(2) what barriers, if any, impede rural student higher education persistence? The results indicate that the majority of rural youth keep a view of the countryside that is in accordance with the ‘rural idyll’/‘rural dull’ concepts—these two images of the rural. The presence and state of rural schools is an indicator on the sustainability of rural communities in its economic, social, and ecosystemic interactions.
In the discussion, we draw on the small body of existing literature on career guidance in rural areas to demonstrate how rural perspectives expose and critique spatial. Students based in higher education institutions in rural settings are faced with various challenges. With developments taking place in the system of education in rural areas, the rural communities are able to recognize the significance of education and sustain their livelihoods. This literature study offers insights into the implication of ‘rurality’ in terms of higher education.
