'only' can appear in various positions, and often appears earlier than its 'logical' position (it's not next to what it actually talks about). 'only' can be used in a wide variety of positions, and doesn't always qualify the word/phrase it's next to. Sentence 2 is not impossible, but i agree. Writing the currency first is probably considered old fashioned now, but is not impossible.
